When you are expecting a brand-new baby through birth or adoption, you may be feeling overwhelmed with all the things you need to get done. It can feel unending, and like a list you’ll never reach the end of: the things to buy or pick up, the people to contact, the appointments to make…so when it comes to newborn portraits, you may be cringing at adding something else. If you’re a mama or dad of other children, it can feel even lower on the priority list than for a first baby! But I want to lay out how planning ahead can actually help you and relieve some of that stress!
-Planning a tentative date for your newborn session will make it feel more concrete: Many clients actually feel a sense of relief when they go ahead and book their shoot, because it’s done! It’s one more thing you can push off your list and mark as “complete”. I know that choosing a date can feel stressful, because it feels like you cannot possibly know when baby is going to arrive. I accommodate for all of the unknowns that come with birth or adoption, and totally get that we don’t know when your little babe will arrive. I will work with you in the instance that you have an early labor and delivery, or if the baby arrives much later than you anticipate.
-Planning early helps prepare your partner and other children: If you have multiple children, you will want to book your newborn shoot early, and help your other children prepare for the transitions ahead. Booking early, before you are super-super pregnant will give you something tangible to tell your other children about and include them in the process, like choosing outfits or props, and getting excited for it. Children are much more excited to participate when they are invited into the moment, rather than just told last minute what is happening.
-Booking your newborn session will also help you get other things done, such as choosing outfits. Giving yourself ample time will allow you to choose the right wardrobes for everyone, and order whatever you need online or in stores. You will have time to plan your hair, makeup plans, and tailor any pants or hemlines, and you’ll be completely ready for your shoot!
-Booking early will alleviate your stress in an unforeseen event: Babies can do unexpected things, so in the unlikely event that you go into labor early or have any emergencies close to the due date, you will already have chosen a photographer who you trust (me!) and who can work with you to make sure that you do NOT miss those precious newborn moments that you can never get back.
You will never regret booking a newborn shoot, even if it feels stressful in the moment! You’ll always have those portraits to look back on, and enjoy, and your future self will thank you! Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. I know expecting parents can feel stressed about quite a few things, but newborn portraits do not need to be one of those things!
