The right outfit? Yeah, it probably exists, but not in the way that you think. The right outfit for one senior is not the right one for another, and I believe that choosing that “right one” is one of the things that gives you confidence for your senior session. That being said, too many seniors put the pressure on themselves to find an elusive “right” outfit, without remembering that there are many factors that go into making it right for YOU. Here are my best tips for making the choice you’ll love for years to come:
-Look for what YOU like, not what you think is trendy. If you’re into trends, great! Some of my seniors love the latest looks, whether it’s 90’s inspired looks or bohemian maxi dresses, but others want more classic outfits. I want my clients to feel free to choose their personal style, and not feel like they have to choose trends that they don’t feel comfortable in. When you’re looking for the perfect outfit, begin with what makes you happy.
-Look for the proper size: Remember that if you are choosing an outfit that you’ve had for quite some time, to try it on for an objective third party. Sometimes, weight or height can fluctuate, and you want to recognize if an outfit isn’t quite right for you before you take your whole senior session in it. Remember to try everything on with undergarments and the shoes that you plan to wear on the day.
-Have a few safe options: Have one more outfit to choose from, in case something goes wrong with one, or you want more than one choice. If all else fails, in the fall, I like to advise clients to have a great pair of well-fitting jeans and a solid color sweater. It’s a fail-proof option, looks great for years to come, and they are both items you’ll wear again and again! This is also a great option for seniors who don’t love fashion, or who feel overwhelmed by choices. Black sweater, light or dark wash jeans, and a plain ankle boot! Voíla!
-Remember to keep in mind what your photos will be used for: Are you looking for make graduation announcements with your images? Are you wanting an heirloom album made for your parents? Remember that if you want to use your photos for a certain purpose, planning your location or outfit choices around that can be really beneficial! If you need more advice about this topic, please let me know.
Choosing your outfit is important, but it’s not as important as YOU, and you feeling great if what you’re wearing. For some seniors, it’s overwhelming or scary to shop for clothes, but that’s why you have me!
