In all the years I have been doing this, which is 10 years, I've heard almost the same old questions from prospective clients. What do I wear? What if my kids are bad?
But what you should be asking are these questions to your photographer.
Why?
Because the more informed you are, the more equipped you are at making decisions that best fit you and your family.
How do I choose the best time to have family photos? I prefer to work around nap and schedules so your kids are happy. :) For many photographers, the best time for family photos is in the evening before sunset but let’s be real if your kids are 3 and undertaking photos at 7:00 PM is not ideal. I am so good at finding good light that it won’t matter what time of day it is.
How do I choose a location? I am always scouting different locations. All I need to know from you is if you want trees/grass, urban look or rustic. I then can figure out which locations will work best for the chosen time of day that works for your kids. Every now and then do we schedule the session time around the location due to lighting situations but I truly prefer to work around kids' nap schedules if possible.
How do I get an amazing wall collage of my family photos? I will have you send me pictures of your walls that you think might be a good spot for your photos. You will measure the area and I can help you layout your favorite images for your wall. I ask you questions to get you thinking about the colors of your walls so you can coordinate outfits. You wouldn’t want your red accent wall to have giant family photos hung and you’re wearing summer pinks and teal greens. I help you think of these ideas ahead of time so you’re not disappointed later or all of a sudden needing to repaint your walls. 
Many photographers only offer digital images so in the end if you don't know what you're doing or what products are out there you get overwhelmed and figure you will just print your photos later; when you have more time to think about it.
When in the last 5 years have you had "spare time". And if you did get some extra time did you think it was fun to sit and sort through photos to decide what sizes to print and how to hang them on your wall? As far as I know, I'm the only weirdo out there that actually LOVES to do this... except for my own walls ;)
