We have all had the moment where our parents pulled out their senior photos and we collectively sighed. Can you believe their hairstyles and wardrobes? For many high school seniors these days, those photos look “cringe” at best! I have found that many seniors request trendy backgrounds, locations, and outfits/styling without realizing that some of these things will look dated by the time their kids look at the photos! So, how do you execute trends and keep your images looking timeless and elegant? Here are some of my best tips for modern and tasteful senior photos that still have plenty of personality and style:
-Recognize that every trend will look dated eventually: No matter how great your outfit is, things going out of style will always happen eventually. Instead, opt for the trends that are suited to your personality and your style, rather than trying to keep up with the trends. Don’t let the fact that something is a trend stop you from using it if it brings you joy. That being said, only utilize trends that you feel good in or really love. Some girls love the sneakers-with-dresses trend, while others cannot imagine wearing anything other than heels. Stay true to yourself and what YOU love and feel amazing in, because it will reflect in your photos.
-Well-fitting clothing is how to have timeless photos: I’m here to tell you a secret: No matter how much money you spend on your wardrobe or your accessories, if they are not properly fitted, your photos will look cheap and outdated right away. Tailoring and undergarments that are the right fit are your best bet: get your pants hemmed to the right length, cover bra straps or get strapless bras, watch for panty lines, and make sure your clothes are ironed. Simply taking these steps (and yes, guys need to also have wrinkle-free, well-fitted clothes) will help your overall look be more high-end and put together.
-Ask your photographer (me) what trends will work for you: I’ve done senior photos for several years now, and I can always fill you in on what things have worked well in the past for other clients. I can also tell you what things are not feasible or that won’t work well. In addition, you can ask if we can modify or try something, and see if it can work well for you. That’s why I always get to know my clients beforehand and plan every session myself…it means you are getting a customized experience with no surprises, and can feel confident in the process.
-Find inspiration in multiple places: Rather than using just one source, utilize multiple sources so you can decide which things really inspire you. I recommend Pinterest for tips and ideas, and Instagram to see what’s trending and for interesting new locations or outfits. Boutique websites like Carly Jean Los Angeles and similar sites can also offer outfit and style inspiration that you can recreate with your own outfits (sometimes at a lower price point if you are a thrifter!). And yes, you can check out my BLOG for even more past shoots and inspiration!
Stay flexible and open-minded: Trends can evolve rapidly, so it's essential to stay flexible and adaptive throughout the photoshoot process. Keep an open mind and be willing to experiment with new ideas or adjust the plan as needed to accommodate emerging trends or unexpected creative opportunities. By staying flexible, you can ensure that your senior photos feel fresh, relevant, and reflective of the latest trends in photography and fashion.
As always, I’m here to help! I love chatting through the process with you and your parent, or brainstorming to bring an idea to life. Working with clients is my passion, and I’m always brimming with a new idea!
