Okay, moms. This one’s for you. I know that family photos can majorly stress you out. Even if you love having them taken, and find great joy in coordinating outfits and hanging the finished products on your walls at home, it still may feel overwhelming to have them done once a year or more. I wanted to put together some info for your moms, to help you plan without stress, and to look FORWARD to family photos.
-First, dress yourself: As moms, many of us deal with insecurities around our bodies. Whether we have stretch marks, weight issues, postpartum hair, or just haven’t found our personal style after having kids (hello yoga pants and the mom bun), family photos may feel overwhelming. I always encourage the moms I work with to find an outfit they feel like a million bucks in. Don’t save your outfit for last, even though it’s super tempting to find the kid’s adorable ensembles first. Find something you love, and then build the family’s outfits around it. Kid’s clothes are extremely easy to find and are more affordable, and you will avoid the stress of trying to find an outfit at the last second. I highly recommend neutrals for moms, such as cream, black, navy, and burgundy, and things that drape well, like sweaters, dark jeans, maxi dresses, and casual blazers for a polished look
-Secondly, know how you will use your photos: Before you have your photos done, it is really helpful to know how and where your photos will be displayed. Are you wanting a huge portrait for above your couch? A few beautiful portraits of the kids for hanging down your hallway? Knowing what you’ll be using them for can influence your color scheme, the formality of your location, and more. If you’re wanting the perfect Christmas card photo, consider what you might wear that will give you a holiday worthy look. Sometimes, I hear of families who want photos done, but don’t have any sort of purpose in mind. That’s totally okay and photos are wonderful whenever they are done! But if you want something specific, please let me know.
-Third, don’t stress about your kids’ behavior. I’m a mom. I’ve seen it all. I am so understanding when little ones don’t want to cooperate, or teens are grimacing in every photo. I’ll work with you so that photos are ENJOYABLE, and not a mess that everyone is cringing through. Please don’t worry that I am judging you if your little one doesn’t want to smile…I’m not! I want you to trust that my experience and my inspiration is enough to work with even the most reluctant photo subject, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve! I want to get the perfect photos even more than you do, and I want your kids to walk away with confidence and joy. It IS possible, and we can make it happen!
What I want all of you moms to know is that you will never regret photos. You will never look back and wish that you hadn’t taken portraits one year. But you will regret NOT having them done. Remember that by getting in the picture with your beautiful family, you are creating memories they will thank you for later. I promise!
