Choosing outfits for your professional photos can feel stressful especially if you want to love it for the next 3-5 years. I've pulled together some tips to help ease some of the stress for you.
5 tips for choosing outfits for professional headshots
- Choose an outfit that reflects your personal style and profession. If you are a banker, a suit may be appropriate. If you are a graphic designer or florist, a more casual, creative look may be better.
- Avoid busy patterns or loud colors. Solid colors tend to be more flattering and professional-looking in photographs.
- Make sure your outfit fits well. If it's too big and baggy you will look bigger than you are. If the clothing is too tight you won't feel comfortable in different poses so it will be hard to relax and get genuine expressions from you.
- Consider the location of the headshot. If you will be photographed in a formal setting, such as an office or in a studio on a backdrop, a more professional outfit may be appropriate. If the headshot will be taken in a more casual setting, either outdoors or at a coffee shop a more relaxed outfit may be okay.
- Consider the purpose of the headshot. If it will be used for a professional website or social media profile, you may want to dress slightly more formally than you would for a casual social media profile picture.
