As a senior photographer who has been in this business for many years now, I’ve worked with seniors from all walks of life. Some are eager to plan their outfits and others are reluctant to even try ensembles on. Often, seniors ask me what to wear and what color palettes look amazing, but there are also several things that you SHOULDN’T do. At Insite Creatives, we've seen how the wrong outfit can distract from your natural beauty. To help you avoid common fashion pitfalls, here’s a guide to what to steer clear of when planning your senior photoshoot:
Busy patterns and large logos are distracting: While bold patterns like stripes or florals might look great day-to-day, they can be distracting in photos, pulling focus away from your face. Large designer logos can do the same, making your photos feel less timeless. Stick with solid colors or subtle prints that complement your skin tone and let YOU be the focus of the picture. Additionally, avoid neon colors which can look harsh in photographs and cast odd reflections on your skin.
Ill-fitting clothing can ruin your photos: Wearing clothes that don’t fit properly can ruin even the best photos. Baggy clothes can make you look larger than you are, while clothes that are too tight can make you feel uncomfortable. Choose outfits that fit well and allow for movement. If you’re unsure about sizing, try on your outfit in front of a mirror or ask someone for their opinion to make sure it looks great from all angles (have them snap some phone images so you can see how it looks, too). Lastly, be sure all your undergarments fit properly and don’t sag, hang out, or constrict your movements.
Stick to classic, minimal accessories: Accessories can elevate your look, but too many can be overwhelming. Chunky jewelry, oversized hats, or too many trendy pieces can take attention away from you, which is the main focus. Keep accessories simple (like a small necklace or subtle gold or silver earrings) that enhance your outfit without overpowering it. The goal is to keep things balanced and let your personality shine through. If you do choose one larger accessory, pair it with a simpler outfit.
Steer clear of trends that you don’t love: What’s trendy today might not look as great in a few years, and since your senior photos are something you’ll keep for a lifetime, it’s best to avoid outfits that are overly trendy. Choose classic, timeless pieces that show off your personal style without being tied to a specific fashion moment. You want to look back at these photos and still love what you’re wearing years from now. Some seniors feel the need to follow trends, even if those trends aren’t something they’d typically wear, and then they look uncomfortable.
Opt for comfort and movement: One of the most important tips is to feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, so avoid clothes that are too tight or that you cannot breathe in. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or feel self-conscious, it will show in the photos. Choose clothes that you feel confident and relaxed in. When you feel good, it will come across in the pictures, and you’ll be able to focus on having fun rather than worrying about your outfit.
Don’t wear seasonal-inappropriate items: Lastly, keep in mind the weather and location of your photoshoot. Wearing summer clothes for a winter shoot can leave you looking cold and uncomfortable, while heavy layers in the summer can make you sweat. Make sure your outfit works for the season and fits well with the setting. For example, earthy tones might work well for an outdoor shoot, while bold, bright colors can pop in an urban location.
